Canadian Coup
There is, as I write this, an attempt to overthrow our Canadian government. The 3 parties that lost in our October 13 election, the Liberals, the NDP, and the Bloc Québécois, are attempting to join in a "coalition" to defeat the party that which currently holds power, the Conservatives. The way our electoral system works, the party with the most seats in parliament, holds power and declares who the Prime Minister will be. This is all well and good, unless the winning party does not make up more than half of those seats. If you have the most seats, but that number is fewer than half of the seats in parliament (which equals 308), then you comprise a minority government. If you have the most seats and have more than half of those seats, then you comprise a majority government.

Absence
Yes, I know. I've been absent for far too long. Unfortunately, it seems this is the way it's going to be for a little while. On December 2 we welcomed our second child into the family and, with that, have been extremely busy trying to find a routine that works for all of us. Hunter seems to be feeling ignored, Landon wants to sleep (at least until we want to do the same), I had to go back to work and Melinda sure can't do it all. This site was the one area that I could pull some time out of to try and help out more.

Ontario Young Drivers
If you're getting your license any time soon, and live in the province of Ontario, you may want to watch the upcoming headlines closely. It seems Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty wants to step a little further into your life. There is legislation, being looked at right now, that will limit you extensively when it comes to getting about and living your life. That includes going to school, going to work, going to a movie, going to the mall, or going to a bar. If you were planning on helping out and being a designated driver for your friends, think again.

Political Leaning
I have made up a pretty neat little script that calculates your political leaning depending on your answers. Give it a try, you might surprise yourself, you might not. Feel free to leave your Personal and Economic score in the comments, this could be fun!
Political Parties
I have been doing a lot of reading lately on politics and I wanted to post my opinions on all 20 parties running in this upcoming Federal Election. I am going to post them in order of preference just because it's my opinion and that's what I feel like *grin*. I'll do my best to link sources and all, but some of this will be pure opinion. This list comes from Elections Canada Online. Anyway, here goes:

Candidacy
Sorry, I know I haven't been around here much in the past few weeks, but, hopefully, that will change in short order. During the time away, I've managed to search out and find a new place to live, transfer or cancel the bills and finally move all our stuff over to the new place. None of this was done on my own, of course. My fiance helped out a great deal in finding the place and helping clean the old place and my brother and parents helped with the moving of the stuff. My poor brother has had to help me lift my TV up and down stairs about 8 times now and everyone should feel for him. The help is greatly appreciated though.
On another note, I would like to let people know that I have volunteered to run as a candidate for the Libertarian Party of Canada for the Edmonton -- Millwoods -- Beaumont riding in the upcoming (Read: iminent) Federal election. I would love to hear from any and everyone regarding any concerns or questions they may have relevant to the LPC's policies or what it might be like in a Libertarian government. I have touched the issues in a couple articles, namely Libertarianism and Libertarianism Revisited. I really don't mind the questions, or debate, and would genuinely love to hear from you!

Handguns Are Necessary
I posted a comment yesterday to a blog titled "No Handguns Necessary" on the website "Scott's Diatribe". The following quote pretty much sums up his thoughts:
That being said, I am of the opinion that once the Conservatives are ousted from power, handguns of all types should indeed be banned. I see absolutely no reason for ordinary Canadians to have to own a handgun any more then not seeing the reason for them owning an assault rifle. If someone counters that farmers and such need something to shoot pests, a rifle or shotgun is of a better use to them in that regard. My relatives who are farmers all own rifles for that express purpose; none of them have ever expressed a desire to get a handgun to defend the farm from varmints. Handguns should be limited to the military and the police.

Defensive Guns
I have found some examples and, over the next while, I am going to keep my eyes open for more examples of guns used in a defensive manner. My hope is that, by showing these, you or someone else will understand that guns are not the terrible tool that the media has made it out to be. I encourage you to read the examples in their entirety and not just skip them assuming they have no relation to you. I personally have been involved with people who have approached my car because they're angry at me, and had a trucker wave a bat out his window at me because I was doing the speed limit. Nobody is above this happening to them and I continue to wonder why the government won't allow us to properly defend ourselves.

Gun Control
Somebody help me here, I am having a hard time understanding where these people are getting their thoughts from. What needs to be said or shown to the people in organizations like the "Coalition for Gun Control" (CGC), in Canada, and "Handgun Control Inc." (HCI), in the USA, to make them think for themselves? Media rhetoric is at an all time high everywhere you go. The only place people get their information from, anymore, is from, as my mother used to call it, the "idiot box". What does it take for people to realize that, like the internet, not everything you see on TV is true?

Libertarianism Revisited
I'd like to take a bit to revisit the ideals of Libertarianism. What would it mean to the average person? What would become of the "free" services we are so used to? Would it mean rampant use of drugs, guns and prostitutes? I will start with re-posting a post from the Libertarian Party of Canada's forum by Ethan Erkiletian. I am going to break up the post, as a section concludes, and put my own thoughts in there.

Garry Breitkreuz
Since people seem to love to go up against my views on gun control, I am going to post more in support of my view. This one is from Garry Breitkreuz, who is MP of the Conservative Party of Canada in the Yorkton - Melville constituency. For ease of reading purposes, I'm going to post the whole article, then pull pieces of it and comment on those individual pieces. I realize these are based in 2003, but there have been no major reforms in law that would cause them to be invalid today.

Libertarianism
I have recently come across a political party that made sense. It hit me while I was reading their Statement of Principles. This makes sense! For me, to put "political party" and "made sense" in the same sentence, was a major punch in the gut. What is this world coming to when politics makes sense? I mean, next thing you know, pigs will be flying and unicorns will be everyone's favorite pet!

Bruce Montague
You know, I've thought many times about this similar action, but I never considered myself to have the funding or the expertise to do it. I applaud this man and he will be my hero for months to come.

Self Defense
So, I've been thinking a lot lately about one question:
If confronted with a lethal force situation and it came down to you or them, could I pull the trigger?
I have pretty much concluded that, even though I value human life about as high as one can possibly value it, when it comes down to my life, or more importantly, the life of my son and wife-to-be, I wouldn't think twice. I have sworn to protect them and I have a natural right to protect my own life. If it came down to it, I'd rather spend 25 years in prison for doing everything in my power to protect myself or my loved ones than see them suffer, either from physical pain or from my own death.
